How to Cite a Newscast in APA Style

American Psychological Association format includes two ways to cite a newscast in a text. The way you cite the newscast will depend on whether you watched it online or on TV. Both ways require a parenthetical citation in-text, followed by a more detailed citation in the References section.

Citing a TV Newscast

In the text, include either the executive producer's or the director's last name along with the broadcast year in parentheses at the end of the sentence.

For example: Multiple cases of measles were confirmed in Canada in February 2015 (Wilson, 2015).

In the References section, include either the executive producer's or director's name, the person's job title, broadcast year, broadcast title in italics, source format, city of broadcast and network name. Indent all lines after the first in the citation. It should look like this:

Wilson, B. (Executive Producer). (2015). CTV News Montreal [Television Series]. Montreal, QC: CFCF-DT.

Citing an Online Newscast

If the newscast was accessed online, cite it using APA's general format for citing Web videos. In the text, include the source name and year of publication in parentheses at the end of your sentence, before the punctuation.

For example: Boston received a record-breaking amount of snow during the winter of 2015 (CNN, 2015).

In the References section, include the source name, segment name in italics, source type, date of publication and full URL to the video. Indent all lines after the first in the citation. It should look like this:

CNN. Boston sets new snow record [Video file]. (2015, February 15). Retrieved from http://www.cnn.com/
