How to Make Thing 1 & Thing 2 Costumes
Created by Dr. Seuss in 1954, the Cat in the Hat is a classic children's story with some very unmistakable characters. Besides the iconic Cat in the Hat himself are the rowdy and mischievous Thing 1 and Thing 2. If you are looking for a fun and quirky costume for two people such as a couple, twins, or good friends, Thing 1 and Thing 2 is an easy and fun costume idea.
Things You'll Need
- White felt
- Large circular object or circle pattern
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Iron-on transfer paper
- Iron
- Black fabric paint
- Red sweatsuit
- White face paint
- Temporary blue hair dye
- Red socks or slippers
- Red gloves

Trace two large circles onto the white felt, using a circle pattern or circular object. Use the pencil to trace your pattern so that any stray marks can be easily removed from the final product.

Use the scissors to cut out your two white felt circles.

Attach the two white felt circles to the iron-on transfer paper. Follow the specific instructions on the package of iron-on transfer paper for best results. Do not remove the paper backing from the iron-on transfer paper until you are ready to attach the circles to the red sweatshirt.

Cut out each of the white circles from the transfer paper, and discard the excess paper.

Iron on each of the white felt circles to the front of the red sweatshirts. Place the circles directly in the center of each shirt. Follow the specific instructions on the package of iron-on transfer paper for best results.

Use the black fabric paint to write the words "Thing 1" on one white circle and "Thing 2" on the other felt circle. Paint the word "Thing" so that it curves around the top part of the circle and paint the number directly in the center of the circle. Allow the paint to dry fully before touching or moving the sweatshirt.

On the day you will wear the costume, use the temporary hair dye to color your hair blue. Follow the specific instructions on the package of hair dye for best results. Allow the dye to dry fully before getting dressed.

On the day you will wear the costume, use the white face paint to cover your face entirely with paint. Apply a small swatch of paint to the back of your hand prior to painting your face to ensure that your skin will not react poorly to the paint. Allow the paint to dry fully before getting dressed.

Put on the sweatsuit, gloves and socks.

Tips & Warnings
Use old linens and towels to remove the dye from your hair and the face paint to avoid damaging your good linens.
If you have sensitive skin, look for hypoallergenic dye and paint.
