How to Select a Gift for a Grandparent
Selecting a gift for a grandparent can be a complicated task. Deciding exactly what to purchase and how much to spend on a gift can be problematic. Grandparents usually enjoy personalized gifts from their grandchildren. These gifts can be photo gifts, handmade gifts or gifts to spend quality time with their grandchildren.

1
Select a gift that incorporates family photos. A great gift idea is to get the entire family together and take an up-to-date family portrait. Sears Portrait Studio regularly puts out coupons that include a free sitting and free 10 by 13 wall portrait (see Resources below). Taking portraits of all of the grandchildren to create a photo collage, choosing a frame with many slots to create a framed family memento and photo mugs are also great ideas.

2
Visit a pottery studio and have the grandchildren paint a ceramic plate that the studio will professionally glaze and fire. Platters with handprints, painted Christmas tree ornaments or mugs with the grandchildren's handprints make great gifts for grandparents.

Send the grandparents on a trip. Many families enjoy paying for the grandparents to accompany them on a family vacation to a child-friendly destination. Grandparents love seeing their grandchildren enjoy places like Disney World. Others like to send the grandparents away by themselves on a cruise or somewhere special to relax.

Incorporate the occasion into the gift. If the gift is for an anniversary, birthday or other special occasion, incorporate the event into the gift. For example, a nice fiftieth anniversary gift may be a surprise party. A great birthday gift may be dining out at a favorite restaurant with the entire family.

5
Consider transferring old family videos or portraits onto a CD or DVD. Many families have lots of photos that could use to be restored or videos that can no longer be watched in their current format. Photographers and media specialists can create a CD or DVD so that the photos and videos can be enjoyed by family. The grandkids can decorate a nice cover for the CD or DVD.

Give the gift of time. Many grandparents just want to spend time with their grandchildren and children. Taking time out of your schedule to arrange regular visits is one of the best gifts a grandparent could get.

Tips & Warnings
Personalized gifts that come from the children are always a hit with grandparents. Cards, framed artwork and photos will always be appreciated.
Consider the health of the grandparents before planning a family vacation. It would be disappointing to a grandparent to have a trip planned only to learn that the doctor would prefer them not to go.
