How to Become a Certified Commercial Diver

Most commercial diving schools will teach you all you need to know about becoming a commercial diver. This includes using mechanical equipment, moving underwater and maintaining a variety of safety techniques. However, space is limited in commercial diving schools; therefore, being prepared for schooling is necessary if you want to be accepted. Prior mechanical knowledge, scuba certifications and being in good physical shape will help you stand out from the other applicants.

Instructions

Determine which area of commercial diving you would like to enter. Most diving schools have a plethora of disciplines to choose from, such as underwater welding, dive medical technician, hyperbaric chamber technology, salvage and much more.

    • 3

Attend a commercial diving school. Expect the school to last approximately 20 weeks and result in an associate degree and commercial diver certificate. The school may train you to complete a variety of underwater jobs. Many diving schools have financing options and on-campus student housing.

Look for a job at offshore and inland dive companies. Many diving schools will assist you in locating your first job. According to Commercial Diving Academy, you are more likely to find a job with an offshore company if you are between 18 and 35. If you are older, inland companies are more likely to hire you.
