Instructions

    • 1

Fold the fabric in half and press it flat with an iron. Pencil on the heart shape you want for the pillow -- it should be half an inch larger all around than you want the finished pillow to be.

    • 2

Cut out the heart from the folded fabric, so you have two identical heart-shaped pieces of fabric for the pillow faces.

    • 3

Lay one of the pillow faces flat and right-side up on the work surface. Position the lace trim around the edge of the pillow face, with the sewing edge of the lace flush with the edge of the pillow face, which will mean the lace faces inward.

    • 4

Lay the second heart-shaped pillow face on top of the first and the lace trim, right-side down. Pin the two faces and trim together with straight pins.

    • 5

Sew around the edge of the pillow faces, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance and removing the pins before you sew over them. Leave a 3 to 4-inch gap along one side of the pillow unstitched.

    • 6

Remove the pins from the unstitched portion, then turn the pillow cover right-way out, and the lace trim runs all the way around. Press the pillow cover so that the seams are flat.

    • 7

Stuff the pillow cover with pillow stuffing until you reach the desired fullness. Pin closed the unstitched gap, ensuring the sewing edge of lace trim of that portion is captured in the seam.

    • 8

Hand-sew the gap closed using small stitches and thread that matches the color of the lace trim, which will help to obscure it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you’re making a miniature pillow, say for a piece of jewelry to sit on, you can fold the raw edges of the pillow faces under, place stuffing and the trim in position, then topstitch the edges of pillow together without having to turn it inside out.
