Stemmed wine glasses can become beautiful decorations.

Artificial flowers have been around for centuries. Used in decorating and art, the modern versions come in handy for parties, events and the holidays, which often call for decorating details that enhance the overall impact of the occasion. Hosting a wine-tasting or other party where wine might be served is an ideal time to use stemmed wine glasses as centerpieces or side-table ornaments. These decorations are easy to make, especially when using artificial flowers. When decorating wine glasses, artificial grape vines can combine with the flowers for a subtle or themed appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your artificial flowers and greenery from a craft shop, vintage store or antique shop. The most suitable types for wrapping stems are the more slender vines and smaller flowers. You can, however, pluck some larger flowers to place inside the glasses.

    • 2

Cut a section from one stem of the flowers so you have a piece about 2 inches longer than the stem of the glass.

    • 3

Start from the base of the glass stem and wrap in a clockwise direction moving upward. Sometimes the wrapping alone will be enough, especially if the flowers have a wired stem. Otherwise, you will need to add a small piece of ribbon or raffia to secure the flowers to the glass stem.

    • 4

Wire artificial flower stems that aren't sturdy enough to wrap on their own. Simply twist a length of wire around your artificial flower, then wrap it around the stem. Tuck in an additional bloom or two until you get a visually appealing result.

    • 5

Take two or three flowers and trim the stems. Tie the group together with ribbon or raffia then tie the mini-bouquet onto your wine glass as an alternative to wrapping the stem. A third way to decorate the stem is to take one artificial blossom, then wrap the stem entirely with ribbon, tucking the blossom into the top of the wrap.

    • 6

Fill the glasses with colored or clear water and float small candles. Alternatively, place a votive candle inside the wine glass to light when your event begins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Twisting artificial grape vines with a stem of the artificial flowers can give you a different look. Or you can use the grape vines with small-bead grapes.

  • it's difficult to use wrapped glassware for actual drinking, so group several glasses of different heights and cup sizes to make a larger centerpiece.
