Making a bracelet out of a shoestring is an easy craft project when working with children. It does not require any special tools and it is a fun way to incorporate lessons involving counting, measuring and colors. It is also a useful way to teach about the importance of recycling by using old shoestrings, vintage beads and buttons. You can use alphabet beads to spell out a name or sentiment. Instructions

    • 1

Measure around your wrist with the measuring tape. Lay out your bead design on your work surface according to the measurement.

    • 2

Make a loop wide enough for the button to pass through it at one end of the shoestring. Tie a firm knot. Apply a dab of epoxy to the knot and let it dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 3

Trim off the excess from the end of the string at the knot. Leave the long part of the string for adding beads.

    • 4

Take the beads from your work surface and slide them onto the string. Tie a knot after the last bead.

    • 5

Slide the button onto the string. Tie a firm knot and apply a dab of epoxy to the knot and another dab between the string and button to secure it. Let the epoxy dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 6

Trim the excess shoestring that remains after the final knot under the button.

    • 7

Insert the button through the end loop to fasten the bracelet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select a button style that has the thread loop underneath the surface of the button for best results.

  • Add knots between each of the beads or group the beads in sets of three or five and tie a knot in between each grouping.
