How to Harvest Cattail Seed
If you are a hiker, rock climber or adventure seeker, you should know that cattails are edible and very useful. In fact, in survival situations, cattails can save your life. Many parts of the plant are edible, including the shoots and pollen. Other parts of the plant are also useful, such as the leaves which can be used to make a mat or basket. The white cotton-like seeds, on the other hand, are often harvested and used for stuffing dolls and pillows. Wait until the cattail seeds turn from brown and firm to white and fluffy. This happens in the fall or early winter.

Clip the stems off right under the seed heads. Place the seed heads in a bucket or paper bag. If you want to harvest the stems as well, cut lower on the stalk.

Pull the fluffy seeds from the seed heads by hand. Do this outdoors on a calm day or indoors and over a large box or container to catch any wayward seeds.
