Tissue Box Pirate Chest
A tissue paper box is the right size and shape to turn into a pirate's treasure chest as a rainy day craft or the centerpiece for a pirate-themed birthday party. Kids can make these chests with minimal adult supervision, and they work well for scouting or other group events. Try hiding one filled with goodies and make a pirate's map to lead your kids to it.

1
Draw a line around the front and both sides of a tissue box, 1 inch from the top. Use a craft knife to cut along this line. The back remains uncut, acting as a hinge for the chest.
-
2
Apply a strip of duct tape on the inside and outside of the box at the back hinge to strengthen it. Apply more duct tape on the outside and inside of the chest lid, covering the tissue paper opening.

3
Cut pieces of black construction paper that correspond with the front and sides of the bottom and top of the chest, the entire back of the chest and the top. Apply glue with a glue stick to the chest and press the corresponding construction paper pieces to it.
-
4
Cut 2 inch wide pieces of yellow construction paper. Glue these around the edges of the chest to decorate it. Use a black marker to write "Keep Out" or another pirate-themed message on a rectangle of construction paper and glue to the top of the chest. Use a marker to draw screws and a lock on the yellow construction paper.
