Protect your table from spills with placemats.

Spills happen, but they don't have to ruin your good tablecloth. Protect your tablecloth and add some colorful decor to the table by creating oval placemats. The easy-to-wipe placemats will make cleaning up small spills a breeze so you don't spend dinner stressing about the condition of your table linens. The oval shape of the placemats makes them especially fitting for Easter as they resemble Easter eggs.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a 12-inch circle on the right side of your poster board using a compass. Draw a second 12-inch circle overlapping the first by half on the left side of the poster board. You can ensure they overlap by exactly half by placing the metal tip of the compass on the line of the first circle when drawing the second circle.

    • 2

Draw two straight lines, one on the top and one on the bottom, connecting the widest points of the two circles. Cut out the resulting shape.

    • 3

Trace the oval template twice on the wrong side of your oil cloth with tailor's chalk. Cut out the two ovals with pinking shears to give them a decorative edge.

    • 4

Put the two ovals together with the wrong sides facing each other – this leaves the right sides of the fabric, the printed sides, facing out – and sew them together around the edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Take your time around the curves as you have to move the fabric at the same speed you sew it.
