How to Double Crochet Stitch in the Center of a Loop

Double crocheting in the center of a loop is an essential crocheting skill.

If you are crocheting something circular, such as a sphere, a stuffed animal or a hat, you will need to become familiar with crocheting in a loop. Make a loop by making a chain of any length with the yarn, and joining the two ends in a slip stitch. Begin stitching around the circle by inserting the hook into each stitch, or insert the hook into the center of the loop for each subsequent stitch. Doing so will have the effect of filling in the center of the circle.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete your beginning circle. Make a chain of three.

    • 2

Insert the crochet hook into the middle of the circle from front to back. Wrap yarn over the hook and pull it back through the circle.

    • 3

Wrap yarn over the hook and pull it through two of the loops on the hook.

    • 4

Wrap yarn over the hook and pull it through the remaining two loops on the hook.

    • 5

Repeat as many times as you'd like, or as many times as a pattern calls for or until you have stitched around the entire circle.

    • 6

Join the yarn to the fourth stitch -- the first after the initial chain of three -- with a slip stitch.

    • 7

For all revolutions around the circle that follow, insert the hook into the top of the previous row's stitches, one-by-one.
