DIY Ruffled Wreaths

Cover flower-shaped foam with felt ruffles for a decorative door decoration.

Welcome a guest to your home with a unique ruffled wreath to greet her at the door. The eye-catching door accessory is comprised of layers of wavy felt circles that are twisted and blended together until the original shape of each piece is unrecognizable. Instead, the felt shapes together become a flowing mass of waves and ruffles. Create a wreath for your home from your favorite color felt, or make a wreath for every season by choosing holiday colors for the decoration.

Things You'll Need

  • Felt (1 to 1 1/2 yards)
  • Fabric pen or marker
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Foam wreath

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a circle with a 3-inch diameter on the felt fabric. Cut out the circle.

    • 2

Fold the felt fabric in half and then in half again. Draw a circle on the top layer, and cut through the folded layers to make several more circles at once. Continue cutting circles from the felt fabric. A medium-sized foam wreath will require approximately 100 circles.

    • 3

Fold one of the felt circles in half, and then fold it in half again. Pinch the pointed bottom of the shape. The top will open slightly to create the first ruffle. Insert a straight pin through the pinched, pointed bottom of the shape. Insert the pin into the face of the foam circle.

    • 4

Repeat the above step. Insert the next pin into the foam as close to the first shape as possible. Repeat until the entire face of the wreath is covered with wavy felt ruffles. The back of the wreath is not covered with the felt ruffles because it is not visible when the wreath is on the door.

    • 5

Lay the wreath on its ruffled face. Cut a 3-inch-long piece of ribbon. Fold under both short ends of the ruffles, and hold it against the back of the wreath. Insert straight pins through each end to make a hanger for the wreath. Hook the ribbon hanger onto a nail on the door. Alternatively, hang a wreath hanger over the top of the door, and then hook the ribbon onto the hanger.
