Instructions

  1. Football Cake

    • 1

Make a layer cake using your favorite cake recipe. Make or buy some chocolate-flavored buttercream icing and some vanilla-flavored buttercream icing.

    • 2

Add a thin layer of chocolate icing between the layers of the cake using an offset spatula. Place the cake in the refrigerator for at least two hours to chill.

    • 3

Place the cake on a rotating cake stand with a cardboard cake round placed underneath.

    • 4

Use a long, serrated knife to cut the layer cake into an oval football shape. Discard the unused cake or save for cake crumbs.

    • 5

Frost the entire surface of the cake with chocolate icing, smoothing it as much as possible with the offset spatula. Place the cake in the refrigerator and allow to chill for 30 minutes.

    • 6

Attach a round decorating tip to the end of a pastry bag. Fill the pastry bag halfway with the vanilla icing. Squeeze the bag downward slightly to remove any air pockets.

    • 7

Draw a pair of horizontal parallel lines in the center of the cake going about 4 inches long and pointing to each end of the cake. Draw small lines, about 3/4 inch in length, equally across the vertical lines to form the laces. Leave a small amount of vertical line at the end of the laces.

    • 8

Switch decorating tips to a large flat tip, such as one used for basket weaving. Draw several thick vertical lines next to each other to simulate the white bands near the end of the football -- about three lines on each end.

    • 9

Write the names of the Super Bowl team mascots in the open spaces of the football.

    • 10

Insert a black jelly bean just below the right end of the lace section to simulate the valve on the football.

    Football Field Cake

    • 11

Make a sheet cake using your favorite cake recipe. Make or buy some green-colored buttercream icing and some vanilla-flavored buttercream icing.

    • 12

Cut the layer cake in half. Spread a thin layer of vanilla icing between the layers of the cake using an offset spatula. Place the cake in the refrigerator for at least two hours to chill.

    • 13

Set the cake on a cake stand with a rectangular cardboard cake board placed underneath.

    • 14

Frost the entire surface of the cake with the green icing, smoothing it as much as possible with the offset spatula. Place the cake in the refrigerator and allow to chill for 30 minutes.

    • 15

Connect a round decorating tip to a pastry bag. Fill the pastry bag halfway with the vanilla icing. Squeeze the bag downward slightly to remove any air pockets.

    • 16

Remove the cake from the refrigerator. Draw a border around the edge of the cake to simulate the sidelines and the end lines. Draw nine equidistant vertical lines on the surface of the cake to represent the yard lines. Add the numbers for the corresponding yard line on each end of the vertical lines.

    • 17

Write the names of Super Bowl teams in the end zone areas, one name in each. Write "Super Bowl" (no quotes) on one line and the Roman numeral representing what Super Bowl it is right below "Super Bowl." Add a couple of pretzel sticks in each end zone to represent the goal posts.
