How to Knit a Lacy Square
A basic eyelet pattern repeats every three to five rows, while more complex patterns may have 30 or more rows before repeating. All lace patterns are made by increasing and decreasing stitches and wrapping the yarn over the right needle before or after the increases or decreases. Before moving on to complicated lace patterns, try a simple eyelet square. Eyelet squares require an odd number of stitches in the cast-on edge.

1
Cast on the number of stitches your yarn requires to make the square as wide as you want it to be. For example, if your yarn knits at three stitches per inch and you want to make a 5-inch square, cast on 15 stitches. If you end with an even number of stitches, cast on one more.

2
Knit the first two rows in garter stitch. Garter stitch is the result of knitting every row and turning your work at the end.
-
-
3
Knit two stitches together at the beginning of the third row.
-
4
Yarn over the needle once. This will create an eyelet hole and replace the stitch you decreased by knitting two together.
-
5
Knit two stitches together followed by a yarn over all the way across the row. When you get to the last stitch, knit it and turn your work.
-
6
Repeat steps 2 through 5 for the remainder of the pattern, until your square is two rows from being the same height as it is wide.
-
7
Knit the last two rows in garter stitch. On the third row, bind off.
