Instructions

Contact modeling agencies that are known to represent plus-size models for more information about the process -- such as specific weight and height restrictions, portfolio requirements and any additional requirements involved in modeling commercially. Height and weight requirements may differ among different modeling agencies, but, in general, they typically look for women who are size 10 and above. Some agencies may take women who are at least 5'6", while others require you to be 5'8".

Maintain healthy hair and skin by drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Take a multi-vitamin daily to increase the natural health of your hair, skin and nails. Keep your body healthy with a regular fitness routine.

Research photographers and choose one that is professional and reputable for your portfolio shots. You want a photographer specializing not only in models but in plus-size models, as well. This is not an inexpensive process, so interview the photographers before making your choice.

Prepare your portfolio with high-quality printed images of various poses and styles to show to prospective agencies and clients. The portfolio should include a wide range of shots to show your range in modeling, both in clothing and swimsuits. Include a resume with any past modeling or acting experience and your contact information.

Schedule an interview with a modeling agency to discuss the possibility of signing you to the agency to be a commercial model. Rather than choosing the first agency you find, do your research beforehand and choose the agency wisely. As you network in the field, ask around to find out if the agency you are considering is a good fit for you. Check at the Better Business Bureau for possible negative marks against the agency. A good modeling agency should not charge you money upfront, as it makes its money through commissions from modeling jobs it finds for you; if an agency asks you for a fee, it is best to move on to another agency.

Stay up-to-date via modeling publications (in print or on the web) and attend open calls by modeling agencies looking for plus-size models. Arrive fully prepared to demonstrate your modeling skills, and always bring along your professional portfolio.
