How to Set Up a Flatfish Lure for Lake Trout

How to Set Up a Flatfish Lure for Lake Trout thumbnail
Lake trout are caught at various depths.

Lake trout are a fun fish to catch because they will fight the angler right to the end. Various lures can attract these fish at multiple depths, but they are most commonly caught by trolling flatfish and other moving lures in open water. Lake trout, and many other fish, tend to swim in the deeper water in the summer and in the shallower water in winter, as the temperature of their habitat changes with the seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the end of your fishing line to a wedding band or another device that will attract the fish. The wedding band is a standard fish attractor appropriate for lake trolling, which is an effective way to catch lake trout.

    • 2

Cut or bite off about 2 feet of lead. Tie one end of the lead to the end of the wedding band.

    • 3

Thread the other end of the lead through the flatfish loop and then tie it. Clip off any excess line.

    • 4

Test the action on the lure by putting it in the water, along with the willow leaf, and moving it. The leafs on the willow leaf and the lure should be pinning or moving back and forth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tie your lines with a fisherman's knot, which requires you to thread the line 3 inches through the loop on the lure or wedding band. Bend the line over and wrap it around itself about five times. Thread the line through the first line loop and then immediately thread it through the loop that you created when bending the line over to thread it through that first loop. Pull the line tight and then bite or cut off the excess line.

  • Multiple hooks are illegal in some jurisdictions, as are barbed hooks.
