DIY Fabric Wedding Boutonniere

DIY Fabric Wedding Boutonniere thumbnail
Suit jackets typically have a hole on the lapel to fit a boutonniere.

A boutonniere is a flower traditionally worn on the left lapel of the suit jacket. Men wear boutonnieres for formal occasions, such as wedding ceremonies. Grooms and groomsmen often wear a boutonniere that matches the bouquets carried by bridesmaids or the overall color scheme of the ceremony. Boutonnieres may consist of real, artificial or fabric flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw different sized and shaped flowers on the back of a piece of a fabric with fabric chalk. For instance, draw a flower with four pointed petals and a round flower with curved ridges.

    • 2

Draw all the flowers on a single piece of fabric for a single-colored boutonniere. Draw the flowers on assorted colors for a multi-colored boutonniere. Use solid colors for a more realistic looking arrangement; use patterned or textured fabric for a more eclectic look.

    • 3

Cut the flowers out of the fabric. Arrange the flowers on top of each other. Layer the pieces so that the bigger flowers are on the bottom and the smaller flowers on top. Trim the petals or reduce the size of flowers, if necessary, to achieve the desired look.

    • 4

With a needle and thread, poke the center of the flower from the back. Thread all of the layers of the flower and then thread the needle through a pearl bead. Reverse the stitch, threading though the flower layers again. Repeat three or four stitches to secure the layers. Make these stitches close to the bead to keep them discreet. Knot the thread on the back of the flower to secure the arrangement.

    • 5

Hot glue the fabric flower onto a brooch pin.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the fabric is too thick to penetrate with a traditional sewing needle, use an upholstery needle.
