How to Crochet a Button Closure
Basic button closure loops add the finishing touch to many crochet projects, and can be useful for such items as baby cardigans, headbands or crocheted bracelets. They are a practical addition to any item that does not have an overlap where the garment closes. Crocheted button closures are also handy additions on knitted garments as they're not only quick to do, they also provide a neat, finished edge.

1
Mark the position on the edge of the crochet work where the button closure should be. Use a pin, or if the crochet is too lacy to hold a pin securely, loop a contrasting colored thread through the work to mark the place.
-
2
Crochet along the row until you reach the first marker. Crochet chains long enough to slip over the button.

3
Crochet along the row, without skipping any stitches of the pattern, until you reach the next marker. Crochet the same number of chains as for the first button closure, then continue on along the row until you make the last button closure.

Tips & Warnings
You can add this type of button closure to any piece of crochet work that has a reasonably straight edge. For very fine work, make the button closures on the penultimate row of the pattern, rather than the last one. This gives the button closure loops a little extra strength.
Crochet an additional row of single crochets on the finished piece, placing the closure loops where they're needed, to add a button closure row to completed items or garments, whether they're knitted or crocheted.
Slip the button through it before continuing on to the next one to test how many chains you need for the closure. Either unravel or add extra chains if necessary. Aim for a snug but comfortable fit.
