How to Learn Crochet Symbols
Even if you're fluent in Spanish, Chinese and Russian, crochet yarn symbols are like a language of their own. Each symbol represents a specific stitch to perform. Crochet yarn symbols make it simpler for you to follow a new pattern because you can simply glance at the pattern, read the symbol and make the stitch. Symbols minimize the need for reading lengthy crocheting instructions and let you get right to the business of creating.

1
Review your favorite crochet pattern and glance at the symbols that are used most frequently. Work on perfecting these first. Practice each stitch several times and keep glancing at the symbol to remind yourself what the symbol for that stitch looks like.
-
2
Hang a crochet chart in your home where you'll see it every day. Standardized crochet charts list frequently used stitches, but specialized crochet patterns might have their own charts. Pick a chart with standardized symbols and add your own symbols if you use intricate stitches on a regular basis. Glance at the chart and make a mental note of each stitch to help you memorize the symbols.

3
Look at crocheting images or videos to help you learn each symbol and stitch. Sometimes it helps to see someone else performing a stitch so you can learn it. Look carefully at the symbol as the person crochets that specific stitch.
