Make bracelets as a birthday party activity.

Making simple bracelets out of thread presents a positive and creative challenge to children. Creating a friendship bracelet, for example, is a healthy afternoon or weekend activity for young children or pre-teens. Braiding threads and beads together is a basic approach to bracelet making, and the child can choose the colors of the beads and threads. Once the bracelets are completed, encourage the youngsters to share them with one another and to make others to give as gifts to other family and friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the child's wrist. Add 4 inches to the initial measurement to ensure the bracelet is not too tight.

    • 2

Cut three strands of yarn -- each one a different color -- to the adjusted measurement with scissors.

    • 3

Place the strands of yarn side by side so one end is facing you. Tape 1 inch of the far end of each strand of yarn to the table.

    • 4

Cross the left strand of yarn over the center strand. The left strand is now the center strand. Cross the right strand of yarn over the center strand. Continue braiding in this fashion.

    • 5

Slide a pony bead onto the center strand every 1/2 inch of braiding. Continue braiding until 1 inch of yarn remains at the near end of the braid.

    • 6

Remove the tape from the far end of the braid. Tie the bracelet around the child's wrist.
