It's easy to top stitch using double needles.

Sewing with a double needle helps sewers create straight parallel lines, zigzag and decorative stitches easily. Besides being able to create decorative stitches, double needle sewing also produces stronger seams. Most Brother sewing machines can hold double needles and inserting them is an easy process. Double needles have two needles on one shank. One needle is shorter than the other, which allows the bobbin to catch both stitches. If you do not have a double needle, check your owner's manual to see what size fits in your machine. The first of the two numbers that designate the sizes indicates how far apart the needles are in millimeters while the second notes the weight of the fabric you can sew with the needle.

Instructions

    • 1

Lower the presser foot and loosen the clamp screw that holds the needle in the machine.

    • 2

Turn your sewing machine off. If you need the light to see, unplug the foot pedal and leave the machine on. Remove the existing needle and set it aside or place it in a pincushion.

    • 3

Insert the double needle with the flat side of the needles facing away from you. Tighten the needle clamp screw and thread the machine using two spools of yarn. Your owner's manual contains information on where to place the second spool of thread. If no place exists on your machine, you can place the second spool of thread in a cup or a jar to keep it from moving around on your sewing table.
