How to Get a License to Become a Missionary

Many missionaries are ordained ministers.

Missionaries serve in a variety of capacities. Some travel internationally on mission trips, while others direct efforts in the local community. Some missionaries provide relief in the form of human services while others evangelize simply by proclaiming the Gospel. Just as different churches and organizations have their own missionary practices, these groups also have their own requirements for licensure.

Instructions

1. Meet with a licensed missionary in your church or religious group to determine the specific requirements for obtaining a license. Consult the church bylaws or policies regarding ministry and a person's eligibility to serve.

2. Complete the necessary education requirements. If required by your church, attend divinity school and earn a degree in theology, Bible studies, pastoral studies or other related field. Otherwise, take coursework at the bachelor’s level to establish a strong foundation in church teaching.

3. Become an ordained minister if this credential is required to qualify for a missionary license. Ordination requirements vary depending on the church or organization, but sometimes include formal training in a master’s level divinity program or seminary.

4. Attend church services regularly to show your seriousness about the faith. Missionaries are chosen based on their spiritual attributes in addition to formal training and preparation. Actively participate in church outreach programs.

5. Volunteer to demonstrate commitment to the vocation of service. Often, missionary candidates must prepare for licensure with a year or more of volunteer or mission work. Ideally, complete volunteer work in the area or region in which you desire to be a missionary.
