How to Clean a Rusty Cylinder Block

Rust may damage pistons.

The cylinder block of a vehicle is the part of the engine that contains the cylinders and, in some models, other parts of the engine such as the pistons and the cylinder heads. This component is essential to the proper running of a vehicle. Within the cylinder blocks are cylinders that host sparks of energy, which turn the pistons and allow the vehicle to move forward. Thus, keep the cylinder block clean and well-functioning throughout the life of the vehicle. Rust, caused by the oxidization of metal, negatively affects the proper functioning of cylinder blocks and should be removed carefully and quickly to ensure that the engine runs smoothly.

Things You'll Need

• Protective gear
• Honing tool
• Drill
• Engine oil
• Rag

Instructions

1. Put on your protective gear. Wear heavy-duty gloves and goggles or a face mask to protect your hands and eyes. Bits of rust may fly loose and injure you during this process if you are not properly protected.

2. Attach the honing tool to your power drill, and put engine oil on the tool; the method of attaching the honing tool to the drill depends on the type of drill you have. Some honing tools snap into place, while others need to be screwed on. Before purchasing a honing tool, make sure it's compatible with the type of power drill you have. Periodically add more engine oil to the tool, about every 10 minutes, to keep the tool moving fluidly and to prevent unnecessary wear.

3. Turn the drill on, and carefully place the honing tool inside of the cylinder. Move the tool backward and forward and up and down inside the cylinder, so that it can remove the rust from the cylinder block walls. Stop honing periodically and check the block for more rust. If rust persists, use the honing tool for longer. Refrain from pressing hard on the honing tool, as this will only damage the tool and will not remove the rust any faster.

4. Wipe down the cylinder with a dry rag, and if there is no more rust, put your honing tool and drill aside.

5. Apply an even coat of engine oil to the now smooth, rust-free cylinder to complete the process.
