How to Level Your New Bathtub
Installing a new bathtub improves the look of the bathroom. Whether the new tub is installed in the same position as the old or in a new position, it must be leveled before permanently mounting it in position. Leveling the bathtub requires special procedures to avoid damage to the tub. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the new bathtub in the planned position for a test fit. Check the level of the tub both from end-to-end and across the tub before proceeding.
-
2
Make small adjustments, less than 1/2 inch, with solid spacers placed between the tub legs and the floor. Use hardwood or metal for the spacer rather than softwood, which could compress under the weight of a tub full of water.

3
Test fit the tub with the spacers and check the level. If the tub is level, attach the spacers to the legs using construction adhesives.
-
4
Fit the tub into position and fasten the flanges around the edge to the wall studs. The nails through the flanges hold the tub in position and prevent movement away from the walls but are not designed to support the weight of the tub.

Tips & Warnings
Some bathtub manufacturers suggest the use of a mortar bed as a support for the entire bottom of the tub rather than the support legs. Pour a self-leveling thinset mortar on the area where the bathtub will be set. Allow the thinset to dry before placing the tub on the mortar. Use a silicone glue to hole the tub to the mortar and seal the edge between the tub and mortar with a silicone caulk.
Get some help lifting the bathtub in and out of the planned location. Modern tubs aren’t as heavy as older ones but are awkward to lift. Move the tub carefully to avoid scratches to the surface.
