How to Add a Wide Binding to a Quilt

When you are about to add the binding to your quilt, you have a few decisions to make. You will want to determine the grain, the width and the fold you want for your quilt. There are two types of binding: biased and grain. If your quilt will have scalloped edges, you will want biased binding. Go with grain binding if your quilt has straight edges. Binding width can vary dramatically based on a quilter's preference. For wide binding, aim for approximately 2.5 inches of width. Finally, choose the fold for the binding. You can choose a single fold or double fold. Choose a single fold if your quilt will be hung on a wall, is small or has uneven lines.

Instructions

    • 1

Stitch the binding to your quilt by starting toward the bottom of the quilt. Use a sewing machine to make a seam of about a quarter inch. The walking foot may be helpful in making this process go more smoothly. Stop about a quarter of an inch from the edge.

    • 2

Turn the binding 45 degrees when you reach a corner. Stitch to secure it using your sewing machine.

    • 3

Cut away excess batting. Many quilters also like to affix a signature to their quilt. You can do this by either writing directly on the back of the quilt or creating a label and attaching it. In the signature portion you can include information such as your name, location and person for whom the quilt was made.
