How to Crochet a Shirt Hanger

How to Crochet a Shirt Hanger thumbnail
Ordinary hangers leave imprints in shirt shoulders and allow shirts to slide onto the floor.

Crocheted hangers are created by crocheting over an existing hanger. The crocheted cover pads the hanger. The padding diminishes hanger marks on shoulders of hanging garments. The crocheting also adds texture to the hanger, which helps prevent the garment from slipping off the hanger. This project uses simple stitches suitable for a beginner, and can be personalized for individual users by adding decorations to the base of the hook. Use personalized hangers can be used as quick, last minute gifts.

Instructions

Tie a loop in the end of the yarn and place it on the crochet hook. Pull the working yarn behind the back of the clothes hanger. Reach across the front of the hanger with the hook and pull the yarn through the loop, making a single stitch. This will wrap the yarn around the hanger. Keep the working yarn behind the hanger. Reach across the front of the hanger with the crochet hook to pull another loop through the loop just made to make another single stitch. Continue to make single stitches around the wood or metal of the hanger until it is covered with crochet.

Bind off the last stitch by cutting the yarn and pulling cut end through the last loop. Work the loose yarn back through the crocheted fabric by pulling it through the completed stitches with a crochet hook. Place a drop of tacky glue at the end of the hanger to keep the yarn in its correct position.

Decorate with a flower or button, depending upon the gender and tastes of the recipient. Sew the decoration to the crochet at the base of the hanging hook. For example, you might add a ballet shoe button to a hanger for a budding ballerina or a football button for your favorite football fan.
