Crochet a coaster that is more personalized and washable than traditional cork options.

Crocheting is an art form that allows the artist to create a variety of shapes using the same tools: yarn and a crochet hook. Even if you're a beginning crocheter, you can use your skills to make small squares to use as coasters. Use a cotton-based yarn for the best absorbency for your coasters and make several so you're never without one when you need it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make a slipknot on your crochet hook using your worsted weight yarn.

    • 2

Make 15 chain stitches. To make a chain stitch, bring the yarn up and around the hook from the back to the front (yarn over). Catch the yarn in the hook and pull it through the loop on the hook. Repeat this for a total of 15 stitches.

    • 3

Insert your hook into the second chain away from the hook; this is not the chain that hangs directly off the hook but the one just next to that.

    • 4

Make a single crochet in this stitch. To do that, yarn over and pull a loop through the stitch, then yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. Single crochet in each remaining chain stitch across the row.

    • 5

Make one chain and turn your work. Make a single crochet in every single crochet stitch across the row. Repeat this step until the coaster is approximately as tall as it is wide.

    • 6

Cut the working yarn, leaving a tail that is 4 inches long. Use that tail to make a yarn over and draw the tail all the way through the stitch.

    • 7

Thread this tail onto an embroidery needle and weave in the yarn tail through the stitches on the back side of the coaster. Repeat this with the other yarn tail from the start of the coaster.
