How to Crochet Spiral Tubes

Add a whimsical edge to your work with spiral tubes.

When you're making a gift for a young child or baby, you have some latitude for adding whimsy to the item. If you're making a baby poncho or a blanket, add spiral tubes to the edges of the item. To crochet these little tubes, you need to be comfortable with adding fringe by crocheting it as the final row of the item. You should also be able to change the pattern by adding length, changing the stitch for a bulkier tube or crocheting extra tubes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Work one single crochet for the final row of the item you're making, using a contrasting color of yarn. Crochet 12 chain stitches and work a slip stitch into the first chain stitch.

    • 2

Work three single crochet stitches into each of the remaining 11 chain stitches to the end of the tube for the first tube.

    • 3

Crochet one single crochet into the same stitch as the original single crochet. Work one single crochet into each of the next three stitches.

    • 4

Work a single crochet stitch and crochet 12 chain stitches for the second tube. Work one slip stitch into the first chain, as you did for the first tube.

    • 5

Crochet three single crochet stitches into each of the next 11 chain stitches to the end. Work one single crochet into the same stitch as the single crochet stitch. Continue working tubes to the end of the row. Fasten off the yarn and cut with the scissors. Neatly weave in all ends with the tapestry needle.

Tips & Warnings

  • This spiral tube, also called corkscrew fringe or piggy tails, is a good choice for baby and child items, ponchos and shawls.

  • Add additional chain stitches for longer spiral tubes.
