How to Crochet Clothing for Teddy Bears
Teddy bear clothing is crocheted using a medium size steel or plastic hook and yarn. Single crochet with a G-size hook works well when making teddy bear sweaters and separates. As a beginner you may have more success by making two piece outfits such as a shirt and skirt or pants before attempting a full dress or fitted jacket for a stuffed toy bear. Adapt the pattern for your teddy bear clothes by using your own crocheted stitch gauge.

1
Look through doll, stuffed toy bear, infant baby and toddler crochet patterns for sweaters, pants and skirts to adapt for a teddy bear garment. Choose a basic pattern with a single crochet stitch for the first garment that you make. Once you understand how to adapt a pattern you will find that you are able to make more complicated projects.
-
2
Measure the waist circumference, arm length, neck circumference, shoulder width and leg length of the teddy bear. Write down the measurements to keep as a guide.

3
Make a chain of 10 stitches with the crochet hook and yarn. Make single crochets in each of the stitches of the chain. Turn your work and chain one. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and across the row. Make a swatch that is about 4 inches high.
-
4
Measure the length of the two rows of crochet to determine how many row of your crochet equal to one inch. Check your crochet gauge by measuring one inch of the single crochet practice piece at the center point of the fabric swatch. Count the number of stitches in that one-inch measurement. The number of stitches in the one inch of crochet will tell you what your personal gauge is.
-
5
Multiply the number of stitches in one inch of your crochet swatch times the number of inches around the waist of the bear. The result shows you how many stitches you need to make for the waistband of a skirt, pants or shirt for that particular toy.
-
6
Follow the doll or infant garment pattern using your measurements and personal stitch gauge to crochet the teddy bear clothes starting at the waistband. Each teddy bear may have a different size due to fabric and stuffing so it will be helpful if you try the pieces on the bear form periodically. You can also continuously measure the crochet work as you go.
