How to Decoupage Metal
Decoupage is a great technique to dress up any surface using your favorite photos, tissue paper, or just about any type of paper you can think of or recycle. While wooden furniture, cardboard boxes and even picture frames may come to mind when it comes to decoupage, metal surfaces can be transformed with decoupage, too.
Things You'll Need
- Metal surface
- High-quality copies or photos
- Scissors
- Decoupage medium or white glue
- Foam brush
- Popsicle stick
- Damp rag
- Polyurethane or acrylic spray
Instructions

1
Cut out items to decoupage the surface. Use personal photos, pages from a magazine, tissue paper or any type of paper.
-
2
Clean the metal surface to remove any dirt or dust.
-
-
3
Prepare white glue by mixing with water to make the glue thinner, or use decoupage medium.
-
4
Apply a thin layer of diluted white glue or decoupage medium onto the metal surface using a foam brush. Place a cutout on top of the adhesive. Use the Popsicle stick to smooth out any wrinkles and wipe away any excess glue with the damp cloth. Continue to add pictures until all of your cutouts are in place.

5
Seal the project to protect it from wear and tear. Apply a layer of polyurethane or acrylic spray to the surface and let it dry. Add additional coats of spray to make the object recede further into the background and appear more like a painting.
