How to Care for Taiko Drums
Taiko drums represent a culture and music form that is native to Japan. In fact, the word taiko means "drum" and represents several types of Japanese-styled instruments. Taiko drums are not delicate instruments, and with the proper care and maintenance, they can last for decades. All taiko drums are made predominantly of wood and high-quality rawhide, materials that require very little effort to maintain other than being attentive to your equipment when storing it, transporting it and playing.

1
Find a padded case for your drum. Ensure that it is properly sized for your equipment. Cover very large drums with waterproof material such as tarp.

2
Use care when handling your taiko drum, even while it is in a carry case. Avoid dropping it from your shoulder to the floor carelessly and from higher distances. Watch out for corners when storing it in vehicles, closets and other tight spaces.

3
Throw a dust cover over the drum when it is stationary at home or elsewhere for long periods of time. Avoid placing heavy items on top of it, particularly on the drum head.

Apply wood drum polish to a soft cloth and rub it on the taiko drum's body according to the product label. Do not put polish or oils on the drum head.
