How to Crochet Into a Magic Circle

How to Crochet Into a Magic Circle thumbnail
Use the magic circle technique to create perfect crochet flowers.

When crocheting a circular design, the starting row should have an almost invisible center, not a gaping donut hole. Rather than spending hours attempting to get the perfect opening row, use the technique known as the magic circle. The magic circle produces an adjustable ring that gets smaller the more you crochet, resulting in the perfect center for a crochet round.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the end of your yarn into a large loop with a 6-inch tail. Pinch the loop together using the thumb and index finger of your prominent hand.

    • 2

Use your crochet hook to pull the yarn from behind the loop. Hook the yarn and pull it into the center of the loop.

    • 3

Chain stitch three stitches. As you stitch, insert your pinky and ring fingers inside the loop to hold it taught.

    • 4

Double chain stitch into the loop — the amount of double chains you complete will depend on the pattern you are following. Continue crocheting over the tail of yarn. When you have completed the number of double chains required, pull the tail string tight to turn your straight stitches into a round circle. The hole in the center will be almost invisible.
