In textiles, a chevron pattern resembles a ripple or zigzag, with a series of "hills" and "valleys" in the yarn pattern. You can recreate this pattern using crochet stitches; alternate colors every other row to truly emphasize the shaping, or keep it all one color for a more subtle look. Use the chevron pattern for scarves, blankets and even sweaters.

      Make 23 chain stitches using your worsted-weight yarn and size US I crochet hook.

      Make a double-crochet stitch in the third chain from the hook. Double crochet in each of the next three chain stitches, then double crochet three together over the following three stitches. Double crochet in each of the next three chain stitches, then make three double crochets all in the following stitch. Double crochet in each of the next three stitches, double crochet three together across the following three stitches, double crochet in each of the next three stitches and make two double crochets in the last stitch.

      Make three chain stitches and turn your work. Make a double crochet in each of the first four double-crochet stitches. Work double crochet three together over the next three stitches, then double crochet in each of the next three double-crochet stitches. Make three double crochets all in the following stitch, then double crochet in each of the next three stitches. Work double crochet three together over the next three stitches, double crochet in each of the next three stitches, and work two double crochets in the top of your turning chain.

      Repeat step three for all remaining rows until the piece reaches the desired length.

      Cut the working yarn, leaving a 4-inch tail. Pull this tail all the way through the last stitch to secure it, then thread it onto an embroidery needle. Use the needle to weave the yarn tail in and out of the stitches to hide it, then repeat with any remaining yarn tails.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a chain stitch, bring the yarn up and over the crochet hook from back to front (yarn over). Pull the stitch through the loop on the hook.

  • To make a double crochet stitch, yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook, then yarn over and draw through the last two loops on the hook.

  • To work double crochet three together, yarn over, insert hook into the first stitch indicated and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through two loops. Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through two loops. Yarn over, insert hook into the third stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through two loops. Yarn over and draw through all remaining loops on the hook.
