How to Recover a Restaurant Bench Cushion
Restaurant cushions get their share of wear and tear, especially if there’s a decent menu attracting hungry customers. Whether you have an ice cream parlor or sandwich shop, durability is as important as the décor. New cushions can enhance the design scheme as they help freshen things up. There are plenty of fabrics available that will satisfy both needs and last until the next time you are ready to redecorate.

Preparation

1
Measure the seat and back cushions to determine the necessary yardage for the fabric covering and foam. Buy the supplies from a department or craft store.
-
2
Loosen the screws from the underside and back of the bench and set them aside. Remove the seat and back cushions from the bench frame. Turn the cushions to the back side and remove the staples from the wooden frame with a flat-head screwdriver and hammer. Pull any remaining staples with a pair of pliers.

3
Clean off any food residue on the wooden frames and discard the old covering. Discard the foam if it is discolored and deteriorated.
-
4
Use each wooden frame as a template and place it on the new foam. Trace a pattern and cut the foam with scissors.
-
5
Place the wooden frames on the fabric; make sure to line up the weave or any pattern in the fabric. Trace the patterns, allowing at least three inches of extra fabric around the edges. Cut out the pieces of fabric.
-
6
Attach the new foam to the wooden frames using the spray adhesive. The foam should fit squarely and all edges line up evenly.

7
Place the seat cushions on the fabric with print and the foam sides down. Begin stapling the fabric to the frame in the center of each side and work your way toward the corners. Pull the fabric snug without distorting the pattern.
-
8
Secure the fabric on the corners with one staple in the middle. Trim away excess fabric, and carefully tuck, fold and staple the rest of the corner fabric down.
-
9
Replace the seat and back cushions on the bench frame.

Tips & Warnings
Use a commercial-grade, durable fabric or vinyl for best results.
Heavyweight upholstery scissors work great for cutting fabric as well as the foam.
Spread a tarp over the work area to avoid adhesive spray spillover on the work surface or surrounding area.
