How to Do a Word Collage

How to Do a Word Collage thumbnail
The words in a collage revolve around a theme.

A word collage, a piece of art in which words or glued close together on a surface such as a piece of paper, lets you express an emotion or thought with lots of different words. You make the collage more artistic — more than a bunch of words on paper — by using different fonts and colors. Once you've finished, you can hang it on a wall, scrapbook it or give it to a friend as a gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather together words that you want in your collage. The words can relate to a certain subject, such as music, or contain other similar qualities. For example, the letters could all be a color besides black. Cut these from magazines, books, webpages you print from the Internet or words you printed from a word processing program.

    • 2

Order the words on a piece of paper or poster board. If the word collage is for a scrapbook, for example, you'll want to arrange the words on a piece of scrapbook paper. The order you choose is up to you. You can also choose if you want the words to overlap at various angles or if you want the words to line up, similar to a sentence format.

    • 3

Apply glue from a glue stick to the back of each word. Press firmly onto the paper. Smooth down the edges to make sure the entire word sticks to the paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not overlap words too much. A little overlap, such as a quarter of one letter, isn't a problem. When you can no longer tell what a word or letter is, you've overlapped too much.
