Placing the Expedit shelf against a wall is the standard placement, but if you put the shelf perpendicular to the wall, it works as a room divider. With this placement, decorate both sides of each shelf.
If you set the Expedit shelf in a small room, mount a large mirror to the rear of it. The mirror will make each compartment seem bigger, but also provide alternative angles to the objects you wish to display.
