How to Build a Rounded Corner Drywall Doorway

Rounded corners on drywall are called bullnose corners. They are installed on doorways, corners and moldings. Bullnose adds an elegant and modern appearance to walls and doorways. They are made using PVC bullnose strips that fit over the corners of the drywall and are fastened in place. Joint compound is applied over the edges of the bullnose strips to create a seamless finish that blends perfectly with the walls around the doorway. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fit the bullnose strips along the corners of the sides and top of the doorway. Mark each strip to length by scoring it with a utility knife. Cut the strips to fit on the sides and top corners of the doorway with the utility knife.

    • 2

Hold the cut bullnose strips, one at a time, in place on the corner edges of the sides and top of the doorway. Hammer finish nails through the holes in the edges of the strips every 4 to 6 inches to secure them in place.

    • 3

Apply joint compound to each edge of the strips around the edges of the doorway with a 6-inch drywall knife. The joint compound should cover the edges of the bullnose and gradually get narrower as it extends further outward past the rounded bullnose on each edge. Allow the joint compound to dry 24 hours.

    • 4

Sand the joint compound with a fine-grit sanding block. Apply a thin second layer of joint compound. Allow the compound to dry 24 hours and sand lightly with the fine-grit sanding block.
