How to Sew a Bow Headband

Headbands range in size and structure.

There are several types of hair accessories with which you can accentuate your "look." Headbands are one of these accessory types, and they come in many colors and designs in order to fashionably enhance any style. However, headbands may go unnoticed, especially if their colors are similar to that of your hair. Creating a headband with a bow or adding a bow to one you already have can give you an accessory that really stands out.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a type of fabric for your bow. If you want a single bow with a stiff middle and soft edges, you will need material that can be ironed without being ruined, such as cotton. Any color or pattern will do.

    • 2

Choose a large headband; the color doesn't matter as long as the band itself is smooth. Cut enough fabric to cover the entire length and width of your headband and about 2 inches more. For example, if your headband is 6 inches long and 2 inches wide, cut an 8-by-4-inch piece of fabric.

    • 3

Position the fabric so that it covers the entire headband, and then fold the edges over and hot glue the fabric to your headband, smoothing it out so that it lies flat and follows the curve of the band. Clip off any excess fabric.

    • 4

Cut out a 10-by-8-inch rectangle of fabric. Flip it wong side up, lay it flat and place a small sheet of interfacing in the very middle of it.

    • 5

Fold the 10-by-8 rectangle of fabric so that it is now 10 by 4 inches, and sew a straight line along the 10-inch side of the fabric that is unfinished (unfolded). Flip it right side out, and adjust it so that the seam is in the middle of the fabric. Iron the fabric to fuse it with the interfacing, which will make it stiffer.

    • 6

Fold the rectangle again so that this time it is 5 by 4 inches. Sew a straight line of stitches along the 4-inch side that is unfinished. Adjust the square of fabric so that the seam is vertical down the middle.

    • 7

Scrunch the interfacing together, and wrap a small loop of fabric around the center of the bow. Slide the bow onto the headband, and position it however you like, either with the bow on the side or in the center of the headband. Hot glue it in place if you like, or simply leave it as a slide-on bow so that you can interchange it with a new crafty creation later.
