How to Make a Paper Corner Bookmark

Paper corner bookmarks make great gifts for book lovers.

Paper corner bookmarks are used to mark a reader's place in a book by grasping the corner of the last read page, instead of being placed between the pages like a standard bookmark. While these types of bookmarks have their pitfalls -- they tend to be less secure than normal bookmarks, as they rest on the outside of the book instead of being pressed firmly between the pages -- they're very easy to make. They also have the added benefit of making it quite easy to see just how far along you are in your latest read.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-inch square of paper (one per bookmark)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Paper trimmer (optional)
  • Embellishments (optional)
  • Glue or double-sided tape

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4-inch square of paper from a piece of scrapbook, wrapping or other colorful paper. Use a paper trimmer or a ruler to make the lines are perfectly straight, if desired. If the lines of your paper corner bookmark aren't straight, it won't fit as securely on the corner of a book page. This can lead to it falling off and you losing your place in the book and your bookmark.

    • 2

Make two folds in the paper, creasing sharply. First, fold one corner of the square up to meet the opposite square, with the wrong sides of the paper facing and the right sides looking out, if you're using patterned paper. Then fold this triangle in half again.

    • 3

Unfold the triangle. Smooth out the creases as much as possible.

    • 4

Cut out one of the triangles created by the creased folds in the square. If you have a particular design you want to be the main image visible on your bookmark, cut the opposite triangle -- the one its tip is touching. You will now have a shape resembling the back of an envelope, without the flap.

    • 5

Fold the two triangles down behind the base triangle, forming a single small triangle, creasing heavily. Unfold the top flap. Place glue or double-sided tape on it. Fold it down smooth again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the glue dries on your bookmark before placing it on the corner of a book page.

  • When choosing embellishments, be careful not to choose an overly bulky decoration -- like stick-on gems or large scrapbooking stickers -- that might damage the pages of your book.

  • In a pinch, create a quick-and-easy corner bookmark by snipping off the bottom corner of an envelope.
