Instructions

    • 1

Cut six triangles of the same size from one of the fabrics. The two sides of each triangle should measure 5 inches; the hypotenuse 7 inches. These will be section A. Cut six more triangles out of the contrasting fabric, using the same dimensions. These will be section AA of the quilting block.

    • 2

Cut three, 5-by-5 inch squares out of the same fabric as the Section A triangles. These quares are section B of the quilting block. Cut out one heart out of the Section AA fabric, sized so that it will fit onto one of the section B squares.

    • 3

Sew an A triangle to a contrasting AA triangle along the hypotenuses of both, forming a square. Moving horizonally across the pattern, make another A sewn to AA square. Then sew a B square onto the end. Move to the next row and start with an AA triangle attached to an A triangle. Next, attach a B square, followed by two more triangles. Begin the next row with a B square, followed by two more sets of triangles. Sew the heart into the center square of your quilt block.

    • 4

Cut two rectangular pieces of fabric 25-by-20 inches out of the A fabric. Sew the two pieces together along the bottom edge and then up the side seams. Fold the top edge down a 1/4 inch and hem along this top edge.

    • 5

Cut two strips of fabric 20 inches long and 2 inches wide from the A fabric. Hem along the edges. These are the handles for your tote bag. Sew the ends to the inside top of your bag. Sew the completed quilt block from step 3 into the center of the tote bag.
