Clean the surface of the antique furniture carefully with a vacuum cleaner upholstery brush. Run the brush gently over the upholstery from the top of the furniture to the bottom.

    • 2

Saturate the fabric lightly with white vinegar. Use a spray bottle filled with vinegar for easier application. Let the upholstery dry for several hours.

    • 3

Sprinkle a newly opened box of baking soda lightly over the antique furniture if any odors remain. Leave the baking soda on the upholstery overnight, then vacuum up the baking soda.

Tips & Warnings

  • To help prevent odors from returning, keep pets off the furniture, and refrain from eating or drinking while in contact with the item.

  • Always store antique furniture in a cool, dry location.

  • Wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining and odors.

  • Test the vinegar on an inconspicuous piece of upholstery, such as underneath a cushion, before using it on the entire piece. If the color runs or the upholstery looks damaged, either don't use the vinegar or retest with a solution diluted with water.
