How to Make an Auto Contract

An auto contract should state the guidelines of your car sale, such as the vehicle information, the selling price and the date the payment is due. The CarsDirect website states that a lawyer's involvement with the contract isn't necessary because of the simplicity of the contract. Don't sign your car title over to your buyer until she remits payment. If you're accepting payments or waiting for the buyer to obtain her own financing, wait until you receive payment before transferring ownership.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the date at the top of your contract, skip a line and write "Seller." Put your name on the seller's line, along with your address and phone number. Skip another line, write "Buyer" and include the same information.

    • 2

Skip a line and write "Vehicle Information" and include the car's identification number, mileage, year, make and model. Skip another line and write "Purchase Agreement."

    • 3

Input the terms of your contract beneath the "Purchase Agreement" line. For example, you might write "I, John Smith, seller of the vehicle, agree to provide the buyer, Robert Doe, title transfer paperwork upon full payment for the described vehicle."

    • 4

Add additional information about the sales price and deposit. For example, write "I have accepted a non-refundable deposit of $500 on this day, which is to be applied toward the purchase price of $5,000. Payment is due no later than August 15, 2012 and payable by cash or certified bank check only."

    • 5

Include a statement about how you can be contacted and that no warranty is included with the purchase. You can write: "To make payment, Robert Doe must contact me at 845-555-1212 to arrange an exchange of paperwork and payment. Buyer understands that no warranty is included or implied; the vehicle is being sold as is."

Skip a line after the body of your contract and print the seller's name and your name. Create two copies of the contact, one for you and one for the buyer. Both of you must provide your signature next to your printed names.
