Measuring for a boy's suit is just like measuring for a man's suit. It is important to take the measurements properly, no matter how much squirming and wiggling ensues, to ensure a good fit. Even if it means you have to promise your boy an ice cream sundae to stand still while you cover all the bases with the tape measure -- it is worth it, to get a suit that fits well and looks sharp. The four measurements needed are chest, sleeve, waist and inseam.

1. Wrap a tape measure loosely around the chest, just under the armpits. The arms should be hanging down to the side, in a relaxed manner. This is the chest measurement, which corresponds with suit jacket size.

2. Hold the tape measure at the center of the shoulder blades, then over the shoulder, down the arm and at the beginning of the wrist. This is the sleeve measurement.

3. Wrap the tape measure loosely around the waist. You can find the natural waist by having the boy bend down to the side. Where the natural crease begins signifies the natural waist.

4. Hold the tape measure on the inside of the crotch and run the tape measure down the leg to the floor. This is the inseam for an unfinished hem. You need to have a tailor or seamstress hem the pants for the proper length.

Tips & Warnings

• Because boys tend to grow so quickly some people like to keep the sleeves and pant length a little long so the suit can be worn for a longer period of time.
