How to Make a Fluffy Yarn Pom Pom

Fluffy pompoms can add decoration to knitted hats.

Fluffy pompoms can be used to embellish a multitude of items, from baby booties to bookmarks. The key to making the pompom fluffy is to make it less dense than a solid-looking pompom so that the strands of yarn will move if they are blown. A fluffy pompom requires less yarn and less time spent forming the spherical shape. There is freedom in creativity when making a fluffy pompom, because you can use different yarn weights and textures in the same pompom.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how big you want your pompom to be. Multiply the chosen diameter of your pompom by 1.5.

    • 2

Mark a template rectangle on a piece of cardboard using the diameter of the pompom for the width of the rectangle and the answer to your multiplication for the length. For example, if you want to make a 4-inch-diameter pompom, draw the width of the triangle at 4 inches and the length of the triangle at 4 times 1.5, which equals 6 inches. Cut out the rectangle.

    • 3

Cut a piece of yarn for the tie that is double the length of the rectangle, so you will have enough length to secure the pompom to its destination. Set aside.

    • 4

Draw another rectangle inside the first one, 1 inch from each side. Use your craft knife to cut out this rectangle, leaving an open center rectangle.

    • 5

Lay the rectangle down with a pencil extending across its entire long length. Pick up the yarn end in one hand and the template with the pencil in the other. Hold the end of the yarn against the template so that it is at the top of one of the long sides and falls down across the pencil.

    • 6

Wrap the yarn around the width of the template and the pencil, going down the front and up the back 40 to 50 times. Cut the yarn at the top or bottom of one of the long sides.

    • 7

Slide the pencil out. Thread the tie piece of yarn that you had set aside down into the center hole at one side of the wraps and back up the other side. Knot the tie tightly, gathering all the yarn together at the center.

    • 8

Cut the wraps along the edges of each of the long sides, making sure that every loop is cut.

    • 9

Pull the pompom away from the template and form it into a sphere. Trim errant strands, bearing in mind that the more you trim, the less fluffy the pompom will become.
