How to Make a Crown Out of Wire & Ribbon

A crown can be the perfect way to accessorize a costume. Whether for a princess, prince, king or queen, a crown is an essential element of creating the look you want. Instead of purchasing an overpriced plastic crown at a party supply store, consider making your own from wire and ribbon. You can create a custom crown that fits your head and your vision of how you would like your costume to look.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a length of 22-gauge wire four times around the head of the person who will wear the crown.

    • 2

Snip off any excess wire using a pair of wire nippers.

    • 3

Secure the wire loop together by twisting the two loose ends together and folding them back against the side of the loop.

    • 4

Add additional wire around the rim of the crown, if desired. You can add swirls, arches, points or curly-ques, just be creative. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to shape the wire, and secure each new piece to the rim by twisting the loose ends around the circular base.

    • 5

Cut an 8-foot length of ribbon with scissors. Fabric ribbon works best for making your crown, although some synthetics can also yield attractive results.

    • 6

Place the center of the ribbon at the center front of the crown. Wrap each end of the ribbon around the rim of the crown, working toward the back of the crown. Tie off both ends of the ribbon at the back.

    • 7

Trim the remaining ribbon to your desired length. You can either leave the excess ribbon attached as a decorative streamer, or remove it with scissors for a more austere look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try wrapping multiple ribbon colors to achieve a layered effect.
