How to Make a Scarf Using a Chain Stitch

How to Make a Scarf Using a Chain Stitch thumbnail
Use leftover yarn from finished projects to make a striped scarf.

The chain stitch is the most fundamental of crochet stitches, and you can use it to make scarves and many other items. It may take longer to crochet a scarf using the chain stitch than it would using other basic stitches, but because the chain stitch is a short stitch, a chain-stitch scarf is an ideal project for a novice crocheter.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a slip stitch and join your yarn to your crochet hook. Make a slip stitch by making a loop with the tail of your yarn and pulling a further loop taut through the existing loop. Place this loop on your hook.

    • 2

Crochet enough chain stitches for the width of scarf you want. To form a chain stitch, wrap the yarn from the back to the front of the hook, catch it with the hook and pull it through the stitch on the hook.

    • 3

Crochet your foundation row. Slip your hook into the second chain from the hook, wrap the yarn from the back to the front of the hook and pull it back through the chain stitch and the stitch on the hook. Crochet in this method in each stitch to the end of the row.

    • 4

Turn your crochet and work row three, using the same method.

    • 5

Continue crocheting chain rows until the scarf is the length you desire.

    • 6

Cut the yarn and pull the tail through the final stitch on the hook.

    • 7

Thread a darning needle with the tail end and stitch a few stitches to secure the yarn, trimming off any excess.
