Make cushions to store away for overnight guests.

Properly folded corners makes for a stunning cushion. Making homemade couch cushions or pillows, for example, requires a basic and effective squash fold on all corners. Squash folding symmetrically aligns each of the fabric corners to provide sharp and even hem lines. While the squash fold style is often used in the art of origami, it is useful in craft making as well. Once your corners are folded, sew the pieces together around a bed of stuffing to complete a comfortable cushion.

Instructions

    • 1

Place an 18-by-18-inch piece of fabric onto a flat work surface. Adjust the fabric so one of the 18-inch edges is facing you.

    • 2

Fold the top-right corner of the fabric 2 inches toward center. The top flap of the fold now resembles a right triangle.

    • 3

Fold the bottom-right corner of the right triangle over to the bottom-left corner. Fold the top-left corner down to the bottom-left corner. The fabric corner is now formed.

    • 4

Pull the top and left edge of the fabric taught.

    • 5

Iron the top-right corner to maintain the shape. Repeat steps two through five to squash fold all of the corners.
