Enjoy Halloween with a Windows Paint-created poster.

To get in the spooky and sugary spirit of Halloween, deck out your halls and walls with a Halloween poster. Making a Halloween poster does not have to be scary; use Windows Paint for a poster-designing treat. Paint, which is included with the Windows operating system, allows for complete poster design including drawing and photo positioning, giving you full control over the poster’s appearance. Greet Halloween with a themed Paint poster.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Windows Paint. Click the Paint button drop-down menu in the window’s top-left corner. Click “Open.” Browse to a photo to use for the poster, such as a group in costume from last year’s party or an intricately carved Jack-o-lantern. Double-click the image and it opens on the Paint workspace.

    • 2

Click the Paint button again. Click “Properties.” Type the poster dimensions into the “Width” and “Height” boxes, such as “18” and “24,” respectively. Click the “Inches” radio button. Click the “OK” button. Paint resizes the work canvas. If the photo is not in your preferred place on the poster, click the “Select” button on the ribbon. Click “Free-form selection,” draw an outline around the photo, and then drag it into place, such as the middle of the poster.

    • 3

Choose a color from the “Colors” section of the ribbon, such as orange. Click the “A” icon to open the text tool. Click the top of the poster.

    • 4

Type the main poster headline, such as “Happy Halloween,” “Boo-to-You Dance Sign Up Form,” or “Halloween Party This Saturday!”

    • 5

Click lower on the poster and type additional information, such as rules for a costume contest, directions to a party or history and facts about Halloween.

    • 6

Choose a new color from the ribbon or click “Edit colors” and select a new shade. Click the pencil icon on the “Tools” section. Draw a simple Halloween shape such as a pumpkin, ghost or candy corn. Switch colors or, to fill the shape with color, click the paint bucket icon and click inside the shape.

    • 7

Change colors and draw additional shapes around the borders of the poster or to fill any white space.

    • 8

Give the poster a background color by choosing a shade you have not yet used from the “Colors” section, such as a very light orange or tan. Click the paint bucket icon and click anywhere on the white portion of the poster’s canvas, which fills it with the background color.

    • 9

Click the Paint button. Click “Save As.” Type a name for the poster file and click the “Save” button.

Tips & Warnings

  • Starting with a Halloween photo is not required for the poster. To do a Halloween poster completely from scratch, after launching Paint, skip the opening step and go right to the “Properties” setup. Create the poster as instructed here, and then follow the rest of the steps. To fill any extra space, add additional drawings of Halloween designs, make your text bigger or add additional text.
