How to Knit Summer Scarves
Summer scarves, worn more for decorative effect than for warmth, should be light, lacy and delicate. That doesn't mean they should be time-consuming or complicated to knit at home. Choose a light cotton yarn in a summery shade and use large knitting needles for a fast, simple, knitting project.
Things You'll Need
- Light worsted or DK weight yarn
- 5.5 millimeter or US size 7 knitting needles
Instructions

1
Cast on 24 stitches. Knit one row.
-
2
Knit one stitch, wrap the yarn around the needle, knit one stitch. Repeat to the end of the row.
-
-
3
Knit the third row, allowing the wrapped yarn to fall off the needles between the stitches. Don't knit the yarn wraps.
-
4
Knit the fourth row. Continue in this four-row pattern until the knitting measures 5 feet or the length you prefer. Bind off.

Tips & Warnings
Pull on the bottom of the knitting after letting the wrapped yarn fall off the needles. The extra yarn will gather up in the knitted stitches creating a loose, lacy effect. If you'd like the knitting even more lacy, wrap the yarn twice round the needles. This pattern will knit to around 5 inches wide. If you'd like a wider or narrower scarf, adjust the number of stitches accordingly.
