Dancers often use ribbons to enhance dance routines.

Dancers often use dancing ribbons as a form of artistic expression to enhance dance routines. Traditional dancing ribbons are handheld streamers made of lightweight fabric such as satin, which allow the ribbon to flow freely when rotated. Dancing ribbons work well with both interpretive dances and synchronized dance routines. When dancers use dancing ribbons to perform routines with sharp, rhythmic movements, the ribbons form captivating designs and patterns in the air. Professional dancing ribbons can be costly, but you can make a ribbon yourself for less money.

Things You'll Need

  • Strips of satin or organza fabric or ribbon, about 4 feet long and 3 inches wide
  • Sewing needle and thread (optional)
  • Wooden dowels 36 inches long by 1/2 inch wide
  • Fabric glue

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a strip of fabric, dull-side-up, on a flat surface. The fabric you chose should float gracefully from the dowel as you dance.

    • 2

Sew the edges of the fabric to strengthen the ribbon and avoid fraying or unraveling. An alternative to sewing is to use the fabric glue to taper the edges.

    • 3

Glue one end of the ribbon to the bottom of the dowel and wrap the ribbon around the dowel diagonally. Pull the ribbon tightly around the dowel and apply a small amount of glue to secure the ribbon in place.

    • 4

Wrap the ribbon around the dowel until it's completely covered with ribbon.

    • 5

Allow the remaining ribbon to flow freely from the dowel.
